Caiera

Part 1: The Dossier: An At-a-Glance Summary

Part 2: Origin and Evolution

Publication History and Creation

Caiera the Oldstrong made her first appearance in Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #92 in April 2006. She was a central character created by writer Greg Pak and artist Carlo Pagulayan for the critically acclaimed storyline, Planet Hulk. The creation of Caiera was integral to the narrative's core themes. Planet Hulk was designed to be a sweeping sci-fi epic, a blend of gladiator films like Spartacus and planetary romance stories like John Carter of Mars. To make this world feel real and to give the Hulk a truly transformative character arc, he needed more than just enemies to fight; he needed complex relationships. Caiera was conceived to be Hulk's equal in many respects—a warrior of immense power, discipline, and a deep, albeit buried, sense of honor. She was not a damsel in distress but a formidable force who could challenge the Hulk physically and ideologically. Her development from a loyalist of the tyrannical Red King to the Hulk's most trusted ally and wife was the emotional backbone of the entire saga, providing the very stakes that would later explode into World War Hulk.

In-Universe Origin Story

The history of Caiera is a story of tragedy, duty, and immense power, forged in the harsh crucible of the planet Sakaar.

Earth-616 (Prime Comic Universe)

Caiera was born into a race of Sakaaran natives known as the Shadow People. Her village was one of the last to preserve the ancient ways and the knowledge of the Old Power, a quasi-mystical energy drawn from the very life force of the planet Sakaar itself. Her early life was defined by a cataclysmic event: the arrival of the “Spikes,” a parasitic alien species that consumed and converted all life they touched. The Spikes descended upon her village, and despite the valor of her people, they were overwhelmed. Caiera's father, a tribal leader, was killed in the brutal conflict. She witnessed her entire village, including her mother and sister, being assimilated by the horrific aliens. Young and alone, Caiera was saved by the intervention of Prince Angmo-Asan II, the future Red King. He and his Imperial forces drove back the Spikes, saving her from certain death or conversion. This act indebted the young Caiera to the Prince. Seeing her potential and her fierce survival instinct, Angmo-Asan II took her in and had her trained to be one of his elite warriors. Her innate connection to the Old Power, though dormant, made her a prodigious student of combat. Over the years, Caiera rose through the ranks, her loyalty to the Red King seemingly absolute. She became his personal lieutenant and bodyguard, the “Shadow of the King.” In this role, she enforced his tyrannical will without question, believing her life was owed to him. She was forced to perform many morally questionable acts, hardening her exterior into that of a cold, unflinching soldier. It was this hardened warrior who first encountered the Hulk when he was exiled to Sakaar and forced into the gladiatorial arenas. Initially, Caiera saw the Hulk, or the “Green Scar” as he was known, as just another threat to the Red King's order. She clashed with him multiple times, both in the arena and outside of it. However, she could not ignore his actions. She saw him not as a mindless monster, but as a liberator who inspired hope in the oppressed slaves of Sakaar. When the Red King, in an act of supreme cowardice and cruelty, deliberately unleashed the Spikes on his own people to try and kill the Hulk, Caiera's loyalty was finally shattered. She saw in the King the same disregard for life that the Spikes embodied, and she saw in the Hulk a true leader who protected the innocent. She turned against her former master, joining the Hulk and his Warbound. Her knowledge of the Red King's tactics and her formidable combat skills were instrumental in the rebellion's success. In the final battle, after the Hulk defeated and deposed the Red King, it was Caiera who stood by his side. In the aftermath, the two warriors, who had found a kindred spirit in one another, fell in love. They married, and with Hulk as the new King of Sakaar and Caiera as his Queen, a new era of peace and prosperity began. For the first time, both Bruce Banner and the Hulk had found happiness and acceptance. Caiera became pregnant, promising the birth of an heir and a future for their new world. This peace, however, was tragically short-lived.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

Caiera the Oldstrong does not exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The storyline of Planet Hulk was heavily condensed and adapted for the 2017 film Thor: Ragnarok, but Caiera herself was not included as a character. However, a critical analysis reveals that key aspects of her character and narrative role were thematically fused into the MCU's version of Valkyrie (portrayed by Tessa Thompson). While their backstories are entirely different, the parallels in their function within the Sakaar-based plot are notable:

Therefore, while fans hoping to see a direct adaptation of Caiera on screen have yet to see one, her spirit and narrative purpose were instrumental in shaping one of the MCU's most popular supporting characters. The decision to merge her role likely stemmed from a need to streamline the plot of Thor: Ragnarok and incorporate existing Asgardian lore rather than introducing the entire Shadow People mythology.

Part 3: Abilities, Equipment & Personality

Earth-616 (Prime Comic Universe)

Caiera is one of the most powerful non-cosmic beings to emerge from the planet Sakaar, possessing a unique combination of innate physiology, planetary power, and unparalleled martial skill.

Powers & Abilities

Personality & Ideology

Caiera's personality is a study in contrasts, defined by her evolution from a loyal soldier to a revolutionary queen.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

As Caiera does not exist in this continuity, she possesses no abilities or defined personality within the MCU framework. The thematic parallels to Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok provide the closest analogue, with Valkyrie displaying a cynical and broken personality that is healed through her renewed sense of purpose alongside Thor and Hulk.

Part 5: Iconic Events & Storylines

Planet Hulk

This is the definitive Caiera storyline. When the Hulk arrives on Sakaar, Caiera is his antagonist, the unshakeable enforcer of the Red King's will. She is the discipline to his rage, the immovable object to his unstoppable force. Throughout the story, she serves as a primary observer of Hulk's journey. She witnesses him form the Warbound, she sees him win the adoration of the masses, and she realizes that his “monstrousness” is a source of liberation for the downtrodden. Her turning point is the Red King's ultimate act of treachery. In that moment, she chooses the “monster” who protects life over the “king” who destroys it. Her arc in Planet Hulk is one of the most compelling in modern comics, as she rediscovers her own identity, heritage, and capacity for love, culminating in her becoming the wise and powerful queen to Hulk's king.

World War Hulk

Caiera's role in this event is primarily that of a martyr and a motivator. The story begins moments after her apparent death in the shuttle explosion, which decimates Crown City. The Hulk, holding her ashes, is consumed by a grief and rage greater than any he has ever experienced. His entire campaign of vengeance against the Illuminati on Earth is fought in her name. Every punch he throws is to avenge his queen, his wife, and their unborn child. Her memory is a constant presence throughout the storyline, a symbol of the happiness that was stolen from him. The event's climax reveals that Miek, one of the Warbound, intentionally allowed the shuttle to explode, making her death a tragic result of betrayal from within their own ranks, not just the negligence of Earth's heroes.

Son of Hulk / The Incredible Hulk: Dark Son

These storylines reveal the aftermath of Caiera's death and her lasting legacy. It is discovered that her sons, Skaar and Hiro-Kala, survived. Skaar, in particular, inherited her connection to the Old Power. Though physically dead, Caiera's consciousness was preserved within the Old Power of Sakaar. From this spectral state, she was able to appear to Skaar, training him, teaching him the history of his people, and preparing him for the day he would confront his father. This posthumous role cemented her importance, showing that her influence transcended the grave. She provided the crucial guidance that prevented Skaar from being consumed by the savagery of the broken planet, shaping him into a complex warrior rather than a simple monster. Her spirit's final act was to depart for the afterlife once she was sure Skaar was ready for his own journey.

Notes and Trivia

1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6)

1)
Caiera's title, “the Oldstrong,” is a direct reference to her mastery of the Old Power.
2)
The core narrative of Planet Hulk, featuring a hero enslaved as a gladiator who rises to lead a rebellion and falls in love with the ruler's loyalist, draws heavy thematic inspiration from historical epics like Spartacus and Gladiator.
3)
Her first appearance is Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #92 (2006). Her apparent death occurs in Incredible Hulk vol. 2 #105 (2007).
4)
The revelation that Miek was responsible for the shuttle explosion, and thus Caiera's death, is a major turning point at the end of World War Hulk #5 (2008). It shatters the Hulk's righteous fury, as he realizes his war was partially based on a lie.
5)
While Caiera does not appear in Thor: Ragnarok, the Sakaaran gladiatorial armor worn by the Hulk in the film bears a striking resemblance in color scheme and design to the armor worn by the Hulk and his Warbound in the Planet Hulk comic, a clear homage to the source material where Caiera was a central figure.
6)
The concept of the “Old Power” has some thematic similarities to other planetary life-force energies in the Marvel Universe, such as the energies manipulated by the Eternals or the mystical life force of K'un-Lun.
