Cull Obsidian

Part 1: The Dossier: An At-a-Glance Summary

Part 2: Origin and Evolution

Publication History and Creation

Cull Obsidian, known in his original comic book incarnation as Black Dwarf, was co-created by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Jerome Opeña. He made his first, shadowy cameo appearance in New Avengers (Vol. 3) #8 in September 2013, as part of the prelude to the massive Marvel crossover event, Infinity. His full appearance followed shortly after in Infinity #1 in October 2013. The character was conceived as part of the Cull Obsidian (or Black Order), a new group of lieutenants for Thanos designed to be an “anti-Avengers” of sorts. Hickman's intent was to elevate Thanos's threat level by surrounding him with a retinue of uniquely powerful and menacing followers, each representing a different facet of cosmic terror. Black Dwarf was specifically crafted to be the group's powerhouse, a physically imposing behemoth whose strength could rival that of the strongest heroes. His design, a massive, horned alien with axe-like weaponry, immediately communicated his role as the team's tank and frontline warrior. The adaptation of the character for the MCU in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War led to the significant name change, where the team's name, “Cull Obsidian,” was given to the individual character, while the team itself was referred to as the “Children of Thanos.” This change has since influenced his portrayal in other media, solidifying the “Cull Obsidian” name in popular culture.

In-Universe Origin Story

The history of this galactic butcher is intrinsically tied to the ambitions of his master, Thanos. While his specific species and homeworld remain largely mysterious, his life was defined the moment he was chosen to serve the Mad Titan as a member of his elite death squad.

Earth-616 (Prime Comic Universe)

In the prime comic continuity, the being known as Black Dwarf is a member of the fearsome group named the Cull Obsidian. This cadre of killers was assembled by Thanos, who scoured the universe for the most powerful and ruthless individuals from worlds he had conquered. Each member, called an “Obsidian,” was a general in his army and a tribute, or “reaped” child, from a annihilated race. Black Dwarf's origins predate his first appearance, but it's understood that he proved his worth through countless brutal campaigns, earning his place as the muscle of the inner circle alongside Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw, and Supergiant. His story truly begins during the Infinity event. When Thanos launched his full-scale invasion of Earth, he dispatched his five lieutenants to different corners of the globe to achieve specific objectives. Black Dwarf was given a task that played directly to his strengths: a frontal assault on the technologically advanced and heavily fortified nation of wakanda. Thanos believed Wakanda's defenses would require a living battering ram, and Black Dwarf was the perfect instrument. However, Black Dwarf's arrogance and overconfidence proved to be his undoing. He vastly underestimated the strategic genius of King T'Challa and the formidable power of Wakanda's army and technology. The Wakandan forces not only repelled his invasion but humiliated him, forcing a full retreat. This failure was unacceptable to Thanos. Upon Black Dwarf's return to their command ship, Thanos expressed his profound disappointment and violently dismissed him from the Black Order. Desperate to regain his master's favor, Black Dwarf was left to defend Thanos's empty base, the Peak, against the advancing forces of the Avengers who were retaliating. In a final, desperate stand, he engaged in a brutal battle with Gladiator, Ronan the Accuser, and other cosmic heroes. Despite his immense power, he was ultimately overwhelmed and killed when Ronan smashed his head with the Universal Weapon, a definitive and ignominious end for the once-feared general. He was later temporarily resurrected during the “No Surrender” storyline, only to be killed once again.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

In the MCU (designated as Earth-199999), the character's name is Cull Obsidian, and his origin is tied to the “Children of Thanos.” This group, while analogous to the comic's Black Order, is framed more as Thanos's adopted, fanatically loyal family, each one taken from a world he “saved” by culling half its population. Cull Obsidian is presented as the strongest and most physically imposing of the children. His story begins in Avengers: Infinity War. He and Ebony Maw are dispatched to New York City to retrieve the Time Stone from Doctor Strange. Upon arriving via a Q-Ship, Cull immediately engages Earth's heroes. He proves to be a physical match for both Iron Man in his advanced Bleeding Edge armor and Spider-Man. His brute strength and versatile prosthetic weapon allow him to overpower them initially. The battle is fierce, with Cull shrugging off repulsor blasts and demonstrating immense durability. He is only defeated when Wong uses a portal to teleport him to a desolate, frozen landscape in Antarctica, severing his arm in the process. Undeterred, Cull acquires a new cybernetic arm and later joins Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive in the large-scale invasion of Wakanda to seize the Mind Stone from Vision. During this climactic battle, he becomes a one-man army, tearing through the Wakandan front lines and the Jabari warriors. He confronts Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson, easily overpowering them. His primary target becomes Bruce Banner, who is piloting the massive Hulkbuster armor. The two behemoths engage in a titanic struggle. Cull manages to disable one of the Hulkbuster's arms and nearly overpowers Banner. However, Banner, using his intellect, traps Cull's functional arm within the Hulkbuster's fist, activates the suit's rocket propulsion, and sends Cull flying into Wakanda's energy shield, where he is graphically disintegrated. A variant of Cull Obsidian from the year 2014 appears in Avengers: Endgame, traveling to the future with Thanos's army. He participates in the final battle against the assembled heroes, seen battling Korg and later being stomped on by Scott Lang as Giant-Man. Like the rest of Thanos's forces, this version of Cull Obsidian is erased from existence when Tony Stark snaps his fingers using the Infinity Gauntlet.

Part 5: Iconic Events & Storylines

Infinity (Earth-616)

This 2013 crossover event marks Black Dwarf's debut and his most significant storyline. As part of Thanos's full-scale invasion of Earth, the Black Order is sent to neutralize Earth's defenses. Black Dwarf is tasked with conquering Wakanda, one of the most formidable nations on the planet. Believing his raw power to be sufficient, he leads a direct assault. The Wakandan army, utilizing advanced technology, vibranium-based weaponry, and superior tactics under Black Panther's command, not only halts his invasion but soundly defeats his forces. He is publicly shamed and forced to retreat. This failure leads to his expulsion from the Order by a disgusted Thanos, setting the stage for his final, desperate stand and subsequent death at the hands of Ronan the Accuser. This storyline firmly establishes his character as immensely powerful but strategically inept and ultimately disposable in the eyes of his master.

The Battle for the Infinity Stones (MCU)

This overarching narrative, spanning Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, constitutes Cull Obsidian's entire MCU history. In Infinity War, he is a key player in the hunt for the Infinity Stones. His fight in New York against Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange demonstrates his power level as he forces the heroes onto the defensive. His later role in the Battle of Wakanda is pivotal; he acts as a juggernaut, breaking through the lines and directly engaging the Hulkbuster armor in a prolonged and brutal fight. His death—being disintegrated by the Wakandan energy shield—is one of the battle's most memorable moments and a key victory for the heroes. The appearance of his 2014 counterpart in Endgame reinforces his role as a frontline threat in Thanos's army before he is wiped from existence.

"No Surrender" (Avengers Vol. 1, 2018)

In this comic storyline, Black Dwarf gets a brief but notable second chance at life. He, along with the other members of the original Black Order, is resurrected by the cosmic entity known as the Challenger to serve as his personal warriors in a contest against the Grandmaster, who has his own team of villains. Now fighting for a new master, Black Dwarf once again serves as the heavy muscle. The resurrected Order proves to be a formidable force. However, his second life is short-lived. He is ultimately defeated and killed again, this time by the spectral hero Doctor Druid. This appearance served as a reminder of the character's threat level but also cemented his status as a high-tier but ultimately beatable cosmic foe.

Notes and Trivia

1) 2) 3) 4)) 5))

1)
The most significant point of confusion surrounding the character is his name. In the original Infinity comic storyline (Earth-616), the character's name is Black Dwarf, and the team he belongs to is called the Cull Obsidian. For the MCU, filmmakers simplified this by naming the character Cull Obsidian and referring to the team as the “Children of Thanos.” Due to the MCU's immense popularity, the name “Cull Obsidian” has become the more widely recognized moniker for the character, and subsequent adaptations in animation and video games have almost exclusively used this name.
2)
In Jonathan Hickman's original plans for the Infinity event, Black Dwarf's invasion of Wakanda was supposed to be successful. However, the plan was changed during development, and his failure was written into the story to emphasize Wakanda's strength and to create a moment of fallibility within Thanos's otherwise unstoppable lieutenants.
3)
Cull Obsidian is the only member of the MCU's Black Order to be killed by a hero who is not a core Avenger from the original 2012 lineup. Ebony Maw was killed by Iron Man/Spider-Man, Proxima Midnight by Scarlet Witch/Black Widow/Okoye, and Corvus Glaive by Vision/Captain America. Cull Obsidian was killed by Bruce Banner in the Hulkbuster armor, with an assist from Wakanda's planetary shield.
