Dylan Brock

Part 1: The Dossier: An At-a-Glance Summary

Part 2: Origin and Evolution

Publication History and Creation

Dylan Brock is a relatively recent but profoundly impactful addition to the Marvel Universe. He was co-created by writer Donny Cates and artist Ryan Stegman, the visionary team behind the 2018 relaunch of the Venom title. His existence was first teased in a photograph in Venom (Vol. 4) #7, published in November 2018. His first full, in-person appearance followed shortly after in Venom (Vol. 4) #9 in December 2018. The creation of Dylan was a cornerstone of Cates and Stegman's mission to evolve the Venom mythos beyond its origins as Spider-Man's bitter rival. They sought to build a deep, cosmic lore for the Klyntar (symbiotes), introducing ancient gods like Knull and new biological concepts like the “codex.” Dylan was the living embodiment of this new direction—a character whose very existence was tied to the deepest secrets of the symbiotes, providing a powerful emotional anchor for Eddie Brock's journey. Instead of being driven by rage and revenge, Eddie's motivation became paternal protection, fundamentally reshaping his character for a new generation of readers. Dylan's introduction was not merely the addition of a sidekick, but the catalyst for the most significant narrative shift in Venom's history, culminating in the universe-spanning epics Absolute Carnage and King in Black.

In-Universe Origin Story

The story of Dylan Brock's birth and early life is a complex tapestry of secrets, lies, and the unforeseen consequences of the symbiotic bond.

Earth-616 (Prime Comic Universe)

Dylan Brock was conceived during a period of reconciliation between his parents, Eddie Brock and Anne Weying. Unbeknownst to either of them at the time, the Venom symbiote, which was bonded to Eddie, sensed Anne's pregnancy. Driven by a primal, protective instinct, the symbiote left a minuscule piece of itself—a “codex”—with the developing fetus. This was a genetic remnant, a memory of the symbiote's time with a host, which Knull sought to harvest from all who had ever bonded with a symbiote. In Dylan's unique case, this codex was integrated into his biology from conception, effectively making him a true human-symbiote hybrid from birth. Tragically, Anne Weying took her own life after being traumatized by her experiences with symbiotes, never having told Eddie she was pregnant. After Dylan was born, he was sent to live with Eddie's estranged and abusive father, Carl Brock. Carl, filled with resentment for his own son, lied to Dylan his entire life, claiming that he was his father and that Eddie was his worthless older brother who had abandoned them. Dylan grew up isolated and withdrawn, suffering under Carl's cold and cruel guardianship. His life changed forever when a seemingly benevolent Eddie Brock re-entered his life. Initially, Dylan treated Eddie with the same contempt Carl had instilled in him. The truth was revealed during the horrific events of Absolute Carnage. The resurrected Cletus Kasady, empowered by Knull, began hunting down everyone who had ever bonded with a symbiote to rip out their codices. Dylan became a prime target, not just for the codex he unknowingly carried, but for the immense power it represented. It was during a desperate confrontation with a Carnage-possessed Norman Osborn that Dylan's latent powers manifested explosively. He unleashed a bio-sonic wave of energy that not only repelled the symbiote but nearly destroyed it, revealing his innate ability to control and manipulate symbiotic lifeforms. In the aftermath, a horrified and guilt-ridden Eddie was forced to confess the truth: he was Dylan's real father. This revelation shattered Dylan's world, forcing him to grapple with the fact that his entire life was a lie and his real father was the monstrous anti-hero, Venom. This complex and traumatic origin became the foundation of their relationship and Dylan's reluctant journey into the world of symbiotes and gods.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

To be unequivocally clear, Dylan Brock does not currently exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-199999) or in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU), where Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock resides. The character is, as of now, entirely exclusive to the comic book continuity. However, the potential for a future adaptation or a similar character is a topic of intense fan speculation due to the events of Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). In the mid-credits scene of Let There Be Carnage, a spell cast by Doctor Strange inadvertently pulls Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote from their universe (the SSU) into the MCU. They appear in a hotel room in Mexico, where they briefly learn about the MCU's heroes, including Iron Man, Hulk, and Spider-Man. Their stay is short-lived. In the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange casts a final spell to make the world forget Peter Parker, which also sends all multiversal visitors back to their home realities. As Eddie Brock is teleported away, a tiny, writhing piece of the Venom symbiote is shown to be left behind on the bar. This lingering remnant of the SSU Venom symbiote in the MCU creates a narrative opening. While it does not confirm Dylan's existence, it establishes that a symbiote is now loose in the same universe as Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Future MCU or SSU-adjacent storylines could:

It is crucial to reiterate that this is purely theoretical. The creators have made no announcements, and Dylan Brock's complex origin is deeply tied to comic storylines (like Absolute Carnage) that have not occurred in the films.

Part 3: Abilities, Equipment & Personality

Dylan's abilities have evolved significantly, reflecting his journey from a seemingly normal boy to the new Venom.

Earth-616 (Prime Comic Universe)

Dylan's powers can be categorized into two distinct phases: his innate abilities before bonding with Venom, and his powers as Venom's host. Innate Symbiote-Human Hybrid Abilities:

Powers as Venom: After bonding with the Venom symbiote following his father's apparent death and ascension, Dylan gained the full suite of powers traditionally associated with the entity, though often with his own unique manifestations.

Personality: Dylan's personality is a direct result of his traumatic upbringing and the immense responsibilities thrust upon him. Unlike his father, who was often driven by anger and a skewed sense of justice, Dylan is more introverted, cautious, and deeply empathetic. He is burdened by a profound sense of guilt and fear—fear of his own power, fear of the monster bonded to him, and fear of becoming like the violent men in his family (both Carl and, in his darker moments, Eddie). He possesses a strong moral compass and a genuine desire to protect innocent people, but he struggles with intense anger issues that can cause him to lose control of the symbiote. His tenure as Venom is defined by this internal conflict: the desire to be a hero versus the violent instincts of his partner and the darkness within himself. He is, at his core, a lonely child forced to grow up too fast, wielding godlike power he never asked for.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

Not applicable. As Dylan Brock has not appeared in the MCU or SSU, there is no cinematic version of his powers or personality to analyze. Any future adaptation would be a completely new interpretation.

Part 5: Iconic Events & Storylines

Absolute Carnage

This was Dylan's trial by fire. The storyline centered on a resurrected Cletus Kasady, bonded to the Grendel symbiote and empowered by Knull, on a mission to hunt down every previous symbiote host to harvest their codices. Dylan, as the unique carrier of a “pure” codex, became Carnage's ultimate prize. Throughout the event, Dylan was on the run, protected by his father and a coalition of heroes. This arc was where he discovered his latent powers, first using them to fight off a possessed Norman Osborn. The climax saw Dylan and Eddie confronting a monstrous Dark Carnage. Dylan's ability to sever symbiote connections proved to be the key to defeating several of Carnage's minions, and he was instrumental in the final battle, solidifying his importance to the wider Marvel Universe and forever altering his relationship with his father.

King in Black

If Absolute Carnage was his trial, King in Black was his ascension. When Knull and his entire army of symbiote dragons descended upon Earth, Dylan was on the front lines. He witnessed his father's apparent death early in the invasion, forcing him to step up and fight alongside the remaining Avengers and X-Men. His unique ability to sever symbiotes from the Hive Mind made him Earth's single most effective weapon against Knull's forces, though using it took a tremendous physical toll. In the final act, it was Dylan who, by bonding with the Venom symbiote, was able to free his father from within the Hive, allowing Eddie to claim the power of the Enigma Force and become Captain Universe to destroy Knull for good. The event ended with Eddie becoming the new King in Black and passing the mantle and responsibility of being the earthbound Venom to a terrified but determined Dylan.

Venom (2021-Present Series)

This ongoing series, helmed by writers Al Ewing and Ram V, explores Dylan's early days as the new Venom. It splits its focus between Eddie's cosmic adventures as the King in Black and Dylan's street-level struggles on Earth. Dylan must learn to control the symbiote while attending school, making friends, and facing a new gallery of villains. He grapples with the symbiote's violent urges, his own trauma, and the mysterious manipulations of future Kings in Black like Meridius. This storyline is a deep character study, answering the question: What happens when a traumatized child is given the power of one of the most dangerous anti-heroes in the universe? It highlights his insecurities, his budding heroism, and the constant struggle to define himself outside of his father's long, dark shadow.

Part 6: Variants and Alternative Versions

As a very recent character, Dylan Brock does not have the extensive history of variants seen with characters like Spider-Man or Wolverine. His alternative versions are more conceptual and tied to the themes of time, fate, and legacy within his own series.
