Emperor Palpatine was created by George Lucas. While a character referred to as the Emperor is first mentioned in the opening crawl of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), his first physical appearance was a holographic communication in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980). In this initial appearance, he was physically portrayed by Marjorie Eaton with Clive Revill providing the voice. The definitive version of the character, portrayed by actor Ian McDiarmid, debuted in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983). McDiarmid would later reprise the role for the Prequel Trilogy, solidifying his iconic performance as the duplicitous Senator and later Chancellor Palpatine. While originating in film, Palpatine's character and history have been massively expanded upon in other media. In 2015, the comic book license for the Star Wars universe returned to Marvel Comics, which began publishing the new, official canon of stories set within the Disney-owned continuity. Series
