The “Guardians of the Galaxy” name belongs to two vastly different teams in Marvel's history. The original team debuted in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (January 1969), created by writer Arnold Drake and artist Gene Colan. This initial concept was a product of the late Silver Age, tapping into science fiction tropes of a dystopian future and a rag-tag group of rebels fighting an oppressive alien empire, the Badoon. This team consisted of Major Vance Astro, Martinex T'Naga, Captain Charlie-27, and Yondu Udonta. They were heroes from the 31st century of an alternate reality, designated Earth-691. While popular in their appearances, they never sustained a long-running solo title until the 1990s under the creative direction of Jim Valentino. Decades later, in the wake of Marvel's epic cosmic crossover event Annihilation (2006), writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (popularly known as “DnA”) revitalized Marvel's cosmic landscape. During the follow-up event, Annihilation: Conquest (2007-2008), they assembled a new team under the “Guardians of the Galaxy” banner. This modern team, which first unofficially united in Annihilation: Conquest - Starlord #1 and officially formed in Guardians of the Galaxy (vol. 2) #1 (May 2008), featured a roster of C-list and forgotten cosmic characters, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. It was this iteration's blend of high-stakes space opera, dysfunctional family dynamics, and sharp humor that became a cult classic and served as the direct inspiration for the Marvel Cinematic Universe adaptation.
A critical point of understanding for any Marvel historian is that the Guardians' origins are distinct and separate between the comics and the films. Furthermore, the comic universe itself features two primary teams that carry the name.
The history of the Guardians in the comics is bifurcated, revolving around a future team and a modern team. While the modern team is the most well-known, the original group laid the groundwork.
In the 31st century of an alternate timeline (Earth-691), humanity had colonized the solar system. In the year 3007 A.D., the brutal, reptilian alien race known as the Badoon launched a blitzkrieg, conquering Earth and systematically exterminating its human population. The original Guardians of the Galaxy were formed from the sole survivors of these conquered worlds, each the last of their kind.
These four founders waged a guerrilla war against the Badoon. Through time travel, they frequently interacted with the heroes of 20th-century Earth-616, including Captain America and The Thing, even becoming honorary members of the avengers. They eventually liberated their future, but their legacy inspired the formation of the modern team.
The team most fans recognize today was born from the ashes of two galactic wars. After Annihilus's Annihilation Wave nearly destroyed the Nova Corps and devastated the Kree and Skrull empires, a second invasion occurred. The techno-organic race known as the Phalanx, led by a corrupted Ultron, swept across the Kree galaxy, infecting and assimilating entire populations in the event known as Annihilation: Conquest. Peter Quill, seeking redemption for his questionable actions during the first war, was deputized by Nova to form a “dirty dozen” style team to strike at the Phalanx's heart on their homeworld of Hala. His hand-picked team included:
This strike team was instrumental in defeating Ultron and the Phalanx. Seeing the value of a proactive team that could “stop these things from happening in the first place,” Star-Lord decided to make the group permanent. He recruited Gamora, the most dangerous woman in the universe; Drax, a being created to kill Thanos; Phyla-Vell (the new Quasar); and her partner Moondragon. Adam Warlock also joined as their esoteric powerhouse. With Cosmo the Spacedog running their base of operations on the severed Celestial head known as knowhere, this new Guardians of the Galaxy was officially formed. Their name was suggested by Vance Astro himself, whom the team met while displaced in time, creating a causal loop that solidified their legacy across millennia.
The MCU (designated Earth-199999) presents a radically streamlined and altered origin story, first depicted in the film Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). This version forgoes the future timeline and the Annihilation wars, instead creating a team of criminals and outcasts who come together by happenstance. In 2014, Peter Quill, a human who was abducted from Earth in 1988 by the Ravager clan led by Yondu Udonta, operates as the self-styled legendary outlaw, “Star-Lord.” He inadvertently acquires a powerful artifact, the Orb, which contains the Power Stone. This puts him in the crosshairs of Ronan the Accuser, a Kree fanatic working for Thanos. The team's formation is a chaotic series of events on the planet Xandar: 1. Quill attempts to sell the Orb. 2. Gamora, the adopted daughter of Thanos, ambushes him to steal the Orb for herself, intending to betray Ronan and Thanos. 3. Rocket, a genetically and cybernetically modified raccoon bounty hunter, and his partner Groot, a walking tree-like creature, attempt to capture Quill for a bounty placed on his head by Yondu. 4. The ensuing four-way brawl results in all of them being arrested by the Nova Corps and imprisoned in the Kyln, a high-security space prison. Inside the Kyln, they encounter Drax the Destroyer, a powerful inmate whose family was murdered by Ronan. He initially tries to kill Gamora due to her connection to Ronan and Thanos, but is convinced to spare her with the promise of a future confrontation with Ronan. The five of them—Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot—form a reluctant alliance to escape the Kyln and sell the Orb for a massive profit. Their journey leads them to realize the true, catastrophic power of the Infinity Stone within the Orb. When Ronan acquires the stone and threatens to destroy Xandar, the group chooses to set aside their greed and selfish motives. In a moment of profound self-sacrifice and unity, they brand themselves the “Guardians of the Galaxy” and work with the Nova Corps and the Ravagers to confront Ronan. They succeed in defeating him by sharing the burden of the Power Stone's energy, an act that solidifies them as a true team and a found family. Their criminal records are expunged by the Nova Corps, and they depart to find new adventures, now as bona fide heroes.
The purpose, operational structure, and membership of the Guardians of the Galaxy differ significantly between their comic and film incarnations.
The modern Guardians were founded on a single, proactive principle articulated by Peter Quill: to address cosmic threats before they escalate into galaxy-spanning wars like the Annihilation events. They are not a reactive force like the Avengers, who wait for a threat to arrive on their doorstep. The Guardians travel to the darkest corners of the universe, confront cosmic imbalances, and engage in high-risk, often covert, operations. Their mandate includes:
Their base of operations for their most famous era was Knowhere, a city-sized spaceport built inside the severed head of a Celestial, which also served as a universal crossroads and scientific observatory, telepathically managed by Cosmo the Spacedog.
The team's roster is famously fluid, expanding and contracting based on the threat.
