Guardians of the Galaxy (Team)

Part 1: The Dossier: An At-a-Glance Summary

Part 2: Origin and Evolution

Publication History and Creation

The “Guardians of the Galaxy” name has been carried by two vastly different teams in Marvel's publication history, each a product of its time. The original team debuted in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (January 1969), created by writer Arnold Drake and artist Gene Colan. This incarnation was a science-fiction adventure team rooted in the tropes of the Silver Age, featuring a band of rebels fighting an oppressive alien empire in a distant future. Their concept reflected the era's fascination with space opera and dystopian futures. While they headlined their own series for a time in the 1990s, they remained a relatively niche part of the Marvel Universe for decades. The modern incarnation, which serves as the primary inspiration for the blockbuster films, was conceived by writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (often referred to by the portmanteau “DnA”) with artist Paul Pelletier. This team was not created in a vacuum but was the direct result of a multi-year revitalization of Marvel's cosmic line. They first unofficially worked together during the crossover event Annihilation: Conquest (2007-2008) and were officially christened the Guardians of the Galaxy in Guardians of the Galaxy (vol. 2) #1 (July 2008). This version re-imagined the team as a proactive squad of troubled but powerful individuals, brought together to prevent galactic crises before they could begin. Their critical acclaim and fan-favorite status paved the way for their MCU adaptation. Director James Gunn brought the team to the big screen in 2014 with Guardians of the Galaxy. This film cemented the modern roster in the public consciousness, blending the comics' cosmic scale with a unique mix of humor, heart, and a 1970s pop-rock soundtrack. Gunn's vision transformed the team from a beloved comic property into a global cultural phenomenon and a cornerstone of the marvel_cinematic_universe.

In-Universe Origin Story

The origins of the Guardians of the Galaxy differ dramatically between the comics and the films. The comics feature two distinct primary teams, while the MCU presents a singular, streamlined origin.

In the comics, two major teams have used the name. The Original Guardians of the 31st Century (Earth-691): This team hails from an alternate future timeline designated Earth-691. In their reality, humanity had colonized the solar system by the 30th century. In the 31st century, the galaxy was brutally conquered by the Badoon, a belligerent reptilian species. The original Guardians of the Galaxy formed as a desperate group of freedom fighters, each the last of their kind:

This team fought a guerilla war against the Badoon for years. They eventually traveled back in time to the 20th century, where they encountered heroes like the avengers and Captain America, whom Vance Astro idolized. It was during these time-traveling adventures that they inspired the name of the modern team. The Modern Guardians (Earth-616): The formation of this team was a direct consequence of two back-to-back galactic wars: Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest. The first event saw Annihilus lead an “Annihilation Wave” from the Negative Zone, devastating the nova_corps and the Kree Empire. The second saw the phalanx, a techno-organic race, infect Kree space, led by a consciousness-uploaded ultron. During the Phalanx conquest, Peter Quill was tasked by the Kree to lead a covert strike team of cosmic criminals and outcasts on a suicide mission. This rag-tag group, which included Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Mantis, Bug, and Deathcry, successfully infiltrated the Phalanx collective and was instrumental in Ultron's defeat. Recognizing the fragility of the galaxy, Quill decided a proactive team was needed—a “cosmic S.H.I.E.L.D.” to handle problems before they became full-blown “annihilation waves.” With the telepathic persuasion of Mantis, he recruited a team of powerful, unstable, and often unpredictable individuals who were all damaged by the recent wars. The founding roster included:
