Act I: A Good Man

In 1942, as World War II rages, the scrawny but courageous Steve Rogers from Brooklyn repeatedly attempts to enlist in the U.S. Army, only to be rejected for a myriad of health problems. His best friend, Sgt. James “Bucky” Barnes, prepares to ship out with the 107th Infantry Regiment. While visiting the Stark Expo with Bucky, Steve makes one last attempt to enlist. His unwavering determination is overheard by Dr. Abraham Erskine, a German scientist who has defected to the Allies and now works for the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR). Erskine sees in Steve the quality he values most: not a perfect soldier, but a good man. Steve is accepted into a special program under the command of the gruff Colonel Chester Phillips and the highly capable British agent Peggy Carter. Tragically, a HYDRA assassin, sent by Schmidt, murders Erskine and destroys the last of the serum before escaping. With Erskine dead, the secret to creating more super-soldiers is lost, leaving Steve as the sole success of Project: Rebirth.

Act II: A Symbol

Instead of being sent to the front lines, the U.S. government uses Steve as a propaganda tool. Donning a colorful costume and dubbed “Captain America,” he travels the country in a USO show, starring in films and selling war bonds. While on tour in Italy, he learns that Bucky's unit, the 107th, has been captured by HYDRA. Defying orders, Steve, with the help of Peggy Carter and Howard Stark (Tony Stark's father), flies behind enemy lines. He single-handedly infiltrates the HYDRA weapons facility where the 107th is being held by Arnim Zola, Schmidt's lead scientist. He frees Bucky and hundreds of other Allied prisoners. During the escape, he comes face-to-face with Schmidt, who reveals his true face—a grotesque Red Skull, the result of Erskine's flawed serum. The HYDRA facility self-destructs, but Steve and the freed soldiers return to the Allied base as heroes. Emboldened, Steve recruits Bucky and a handful of the rescued soldiers—Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones, Jim Morita, James Montgomery Falsworth, and Jacques Dernier—to form an elite unit. Armed with a new tactical uniform and a shield made of pure, indestructible vibranium from Howard Stark, Captain America and his “Howling Commandos” launch a montage of successful raids on HYDRA bases across Europe, systematically dismantling Schmidt's operations.

Act III: The First Avenger

During an operation to capture Arnim Zola on a speeding HYDRA train, Bucky is blasted from the side of the carriage and plummets into an icy ravine below, seemingly to his death. The loss devastates Steve, but Zola's capture provides the location of the Red Skull's final, heavily fortified base in the Alps. Steve leads a massive assault on the base. Inside, he confronts the Red Skull, who is preparing to launch the Valkyrie, a massive, Tesseract-powered flying wing armed with bombs capable of destroying major American cities. The two engage in a final battle aboard the departing aircraft. During the fight, the housing for the Tesseract is damaged. When the Red Skull physically grabs the cube, its raw power overwhelms him, opening a wormhole that engulfs and transports him across space. The Tesseract then burns through the floor of the plane and falls into the Arctic Ocean. With the plane still armed and on a direct course for New York, Steve realizes he has no choice but to ditch it in the Arctic. He makes a final, heartbreaking radio call to Peggy, promising her a dance, before crashing the plane into the ice. Howard Stark later recovers the Tesseract from the ocean floor but is unable to locate the Valkyrie or Steve, who is presumed dead and hailed as a national hero. The film concludes with Steve abruptly waking up in a 1940s-style hospital room. Realizing a baseball game on the radio is one he already attended, he grows suspicious and breaks out into modern-day Times Square. He is confronted by Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who gently informs him that he has been asleep… for nearly 70 years.
