Publication History and Creation

Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Herb Trimpe. Her first appearance was in the Marvel UK title Captain Britain #8 in December 1976, where she was introduced as a supporting character in her twin brother Brian Braddock's series. Initially, she was depicted as a charter pilot with latent psychic abilities. Her role expanded significantly when she was integrated into the mainstream American comics. Her first American appearance was in New Mutants Annual #2 in October 1986, again by Claremont, which saw her officially join the X-Men. The character's most dramatic transformation occurred in Uncanny X-Men #256-258 (1989). In this storyline, Claremont and artist Jim Lee orchestrated the infamous “body swap,” placing Betsy's mind into the body of the Japanese assassin Kwannon. This change, intended to make her a more dynamic, hands-on fighter, was immensely popular and visually iconic, defining the character for nearly three decades. However, it also sparked ongoing discussions among fans and critics regarding its themes. The long and complex process of untangling these two characters' identities began in the 1990s and only reached its definitive conclusion in the 2018 storyline Hunt for Wolverine: Mystery in Madripoor, which saw Betsy restored to her original body, and the 2019 Dawn of X relaunch, which established Kwannon as the sole Psylocke.
