Tippy-Toe

Part 1: The Dossier: An At-a-Glance Summary

Part 2: Origin and Evolution

Publication History and Creation

Tippy-Toe first appeared in G.L.A. #4, published in September 2005. She was co-created by writer Dan Slott and artist Paul Pelletier. Her creation was born directly from tragedy within the narrative. Squirrel Girl's original partner, Monkey Joe, had been a fan-favorite for his witty and cynical commentary. In the preceding issue (G.L.A. #3), Slott made the shocking decision to kill Monkey Joe at the hands of Leather Boy, a rejected applicant to the Great Lakes Avengers who was disguised as Doctor Doom. This narrative choice was a pivotal moment for Squirrel Girl's character arc. The introduction of Tippy-Toe was not merely about filling a vacant sidekick role; it was a core part of exploring Doreen Green's grief, resilience, and capacity for forming new, powerful bonds. Tippy-Toe's initial appearances were colored by this loss, establishing her as a symbol of hope and continuation for the grieving hero. Over time, particularly under the creative stewardship of writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Tippy-Toe evolved from a replacement into a distinct and indispensable character, celebrated for her own intelligence, bravery, and unique personality. Her trademark pink bow, a simple visual cue introduced to help readers and Doreen identify her, became an iconic part of her design.

In-Universe Origin Story

The origin of how Tippy-Toe became Squirrel Girl's partner is a tale of loss and newfound friendship, though this story differs significantly between the primary comic universe and other media, where she has been adapted.

Earth-616 (Prime Comic Universe)

Tippy-Toe's journey to becoming a hero began in the immediate, grief-stricken aftermath of the murder of monkey_joe. Squirrel Girl was devastated by the loss of her first and closest friend, who had been with her since her debut. While mourning, she was approached by a female eastern gray squirrel who showed her profound empathy. This squirrel, who had been a resident of the North Woods of Central Park, was one of several who had bonded with Doreen. Doreen, knowing she needed a new partner to communicate with and command her squirrel allies, officially recruited this specific squirrel. To ensure she could always distinguish her from the countless other squirrels in the city, Doreen gave her a simple but effective identifier: a small, bright pink bow tied around her neck or on her head. She named her Tippy-Toe. Her mettle was tested almost immediately. The Great Lakes Avengers headquarters was attacked by the forces of A.I.M., led by M.O.D.O.K. During the ensuing battle, M.O.D.O.K. unleashed a “Death Spore” that proved lethal to many of the local squirrels. Tippy-Toe was one of the few who bravely fought on and survived, proving her resilience and courage from her very first mission. This harrowing experience solidified her bond with Doreen, cementing a partnership forged in tragedy and immediately tested by fire. Unlike the cynical and talkative Monkey Joe, Tippy-Toe's character was established through her actions: she was a survivor, a brave fighter, and a comforting presence for a hero in need.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

To date, Tippy-Toe has not made an official appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The character of Squirrel Girl herself has yet to be integrated into the MCU's films or Disney+ series. However, it is crucial to analyze her planned and actual appearances in other Marvel screen adaptations, as they provide insight into how her origin is typically streamlined for a broader audience.

Marvel's New Warriors (Unaired TV Pilot): The closest Tippy-Toe has come to a live-action debut was in the pilot for New Warriors, a series planned for the Freeform network around 2017. The show was fully cast, with Milana Vayntrub in the role of Squirrel Girl, and the pilot was produced. In this version, Tippy-Toe was written as Doreen's original companion, completely excising the tragic backstory of Monkey Joe. This adaptation choice is common for television, as it simplifies the character's introduction and establishes the core heroic partnership immediately without the tonal weight of a predecessor's murder. Though the pilot was well-received internally, the series was ultimately not picked up by Freeform or other networks and remains unaired.
Marvel Rising (Animated Universe): Tippy-Toe is a prominent character in the Marvel Rising animated franchise, appearing alongside Squirrel Girl (voiced by Milana Vayntrub, reprising her role). In this continuity, similar to the New Warriors plan, Tippy-Toe is presented as Doreen's long-time best friend and partner. The origin story of Monkey Joe is entirely absent. This version emphasizes her cuteness and unwavering loyalty, making her an instantly accessible and lovable animal sidekick for the franchise's younger target demographic. Her intelligence is still a key trait, but the narrative focuses squarely on her positive and supportive bond with Doreen.

Part 3: In-Depth Analysis: Abilities, Equipment & Personality

While she may appear to be an ordinary squirrel, Tippy-Toe possesses a range of abilities and a distinct personality that make her one of the most effective and underestimated heroes in the Marvel Universe.

Earth-616 (Prime Comic Universe)

Abilities

Equipment

Personality

Tippy-Toe is defined by her unwavering loyalty to Doreen Green. She is fiercely protective, often placing herself in immense danger to defend her friend. While she cannot speak human languages, her personality shines through her actions and Doreen's “translations.” She is shown to be clever, occasionally sassy, and possesses a strong moral compass. Unlike her predecessor Monkey Joe, who was often cynical, Tippy-Toe is more action-oriented and pragmatic. She is brave to the point of being fearless, willing to leap into battle against cosmic gods and super-geniuses without a moment's hesitation. She is also a source of great emotional support for Doreen, providing silent comfort and steadfast companionship through every challenge.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) & Other Media

As she is not present in the MCU, this analysis focuses on her most significant adaptation. In the Marvel Rising animated universe, Tippy-Toe's abilities are portrayed consistently with the comics, though with a greater emphasis on visual gags and action sequences appropriate for animation.

Part 4: Key Relationships & Network

Core Allies

This is the central relationship of Tippy-Toe's life. Their bond transcends that of a hero and a sidekick; they are best friends and true partners. Doreen trusts Tippy-Toe's judgment implicitly, often relying on her for tactical insights and espionage. Tippy-Toe, in turn, is unconditionally loyal to Doreen, providing emotional support and courageously fighting by her side against any threat. They share a unique connection that allows them to operate with perfect synergy in battle.

Nancy is Doreen's college roommate and best human friend. She was one of the first people to fully accept and appreciate Tippy-Toe's extraordinary intelligence. Nancy often interacts with Tippy-Toe directly, treating her as a fellow roommate and friend rather than a pet. She has designed gadgets for Tippy-Toe and often relies on her for help with various schemes and problems, forming a core trio of friendship with Doreen.

As Squirrel Girl's primary superhero teammates, Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boi work closely with Tippy-Toe. They respect her as a vital member of their crime-fighting unit. Tippy-Toe often acts as the team's scout, infiltrator, or secret weapon, and both Tomas and Ken have learned to follow her lead when the situation calls for it. She is an integral part of their team's unique and effective dynamic.

Arch-Enemies

Tippy-Toe doesn't have a personal arch-nemesis in the traditional sense, but she has faced several major threats who are philosophically or directly opposed to her and Squirrel Girl.

Perhaps the closest thing to a true arch-enemy, Melissa Morbeck is a wealthy, elderly, and bitter supervillain who also possesses the ability to communicate with squirrels. However, she uses technology to control them, viewing them as disposable tools. This makes her the antithesis of everything Squirrel Girl and Tippy-Toe stand for. Morbeck's attempts to dominate and weaponize squirrel-kind represent a direct ideological and personal threat to Tippy-Toe and her relationship with her species.

While primarily Squirrel Girl's nemesis, Doctor Doom holds a special significance in Tippy-Toe's history. Her predecessor, Monkey Joe, was murdered by an imposter dressed as Doom. This historical tie binds Tippy-Toe to Doom's legacy. Furthermore, Tippy-Toe has personally participated in missions to infiltrate and thwart Doom's plans, most notably by sneaking into his Latverian castle, making the conflict a personal one.

This Asgardian entity is the mythological “World-Squirrel” who carries messages up and down the world-tree Yggdrasil. When Ratatoskr came to Earth and used her powers to sow chaos and discord, she posed a unique threat. As a fellow squirrel, but one with divine power and malicious intent, she challenged Tippy-Toe's very nature and forced her and Doreen to operate on a mythological scale.

Affiliations

Tippy-Toe became a member of the GLA alongside Squirrel Girl shortly after Monkey Joe's death. She was a full, if unofficial, member of this perpetually struggling and bizarre team of heroes, participating in their chaotic battles and misadventures.

When Squirrel Girl became associated with Sunspot's Avengers Idea Mechanics and later served as a nanny at Avengers Mansion, Tippy-Toe was a constant presence. Her status as a hero was officially recognized when she was given her own Avengers ID card, making her one of the few non-humanoid, non-super-powered beings to be formally acknowledged as an Avenger.

This is not a formal group, but rather the ad-hoc network of millions of squirrels across New York City and beyond that Squirrel Girl can call upon for aid. Within this network, Tippy-Toe functions as the de facto general or second-in-command. She translates Doreen's strategies into actionable orders and leads squirrel battalions in the field.

Part 5: Iconic Events & Storylines

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe

In this original graphic novel, a transporter accident creates a perfect, but evil and ambitious, duplicate of Squirrel Girl named Allene. This duplicate proceeds to systematically defeat Earth's heroes with cold, ruthless efficiency. Tippy-Toe is one of the very first to realize that something is wrong with her friend. Her deep, personal knowledge of the real Doreen allows her to see through the duplicate's facade when no one else can. She risks her life to escape from Allene and find the real Doreen, becoming the catalyst for the heroes' eventual victory. This story highlights her intelligence, perception, and profound loyalty above all else.

War with Ratatoskr (The Forbidden Nuts of the Black Bull)

This major arc in The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl delves into Norse mythology. When the trickster squirrel-god Ratatoskr is unleashed on Earth, she uses her divine powers to turn the entire city of New York against Squirrel Girl. Tippy-Toe is immune to this influence due to her strong will and bond with Doreen. She becomes a crucial ally in a conflict that involves time travel to the 1960s, battles with Thor, and convincing Odin to intervene. This storyline elevated Tippy-Toe from a clever sidekick to a figure of mythological significance, proving she could hold her own even against gods.

War of the Realms

During Marvel's massive crossover event where Malekith and his armies invaded Earth, Canada was overrun by Frost Giants. Squirrel Girl, along with her allies (including Tippy-Toe), was tasked with liberating the entire country. Tippy-Toe's role was critical. She acted as a scout, weaving through the legs of giant invaders to gather intelligence, and led swarms of Canadian squirrels in coordinated attacks to disable Frost Giant weaponry and create diversions. Her bravery during this global crisis demonstrated that even in the largest, most epic Marvel conflicts, she remains an effective and valuable hero.

Part 6: Variants and Alternative Versions

In this universe, Squirrel Girl and her squirrels were mentioned as being part of a team called the X-Men rejects, though Tippy-Toe herself was not specifically named or shown. The tone of the Ultimate Universe suggests their adventures would have been far grimmer.

While not explicitly shown in the main Marvel Zombies series, the concept implies that a zombified Tippy-Toe would exist on any Earth where Squirrel Girl was infected by the hunger plague. Such a variant would be a terrifyingly fast and agile predator, retaining her intelligence but twisted to serve the zombie horde.

Tippy-Toe is a frequent presence in video games featuring Squirrel Girl.
