Notes and Trivia

1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7)

1)
The name Jack Russell is a direct pun on the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed, a fact often joked about both by fans and occasionally within the comics themselves.
2)
The creation of Werewolf by Night, alongside characters like Dracula and Morbius, was only possible after the Comics Code Authority relaxed its stringent rules in 1971, which had previously banned depictions of werewolves, vampires, and other classic monsters in mainstream comics.
3)
The MCU's `Werewolf by Night` Special Presentation was directed by famed composer Michael Giacchino and was filmed almost entirely in black-and-white. This was a deliberate stylistic choice to pay homage to the classic Universal monster movies of the 1930s and 1940s, such as `The Wolf Man` and `Frankenstein`.
4)
In the comics, Jack has occasionally been able to gain full control over his werewolf form, most notably after being treated by the sorcerer Doctor Glitternight, which allowed him to transform at will and retain his human intelligence. However, like most “cures” in comics, this level of control has rarely been permanent.
5)
The character of Moon Knight, who first appeared in `Werewolf by Night #32` (August 1975), was originally conceived as a one-off antagonist for the Werewolf. His unique design and mysterious nature proved so popular with readers that he was brought back and eventually given his own complex backstory and series.
6)
Jack Russell's ancestral home, Russoff Manor, is located in Transylvania, placing the origins of his curse squarely in the heart of classic gothic horror territory and facilitating his many confrontations with Dracula.
7)
While Jack Russell is the most famous, the title of Werewolf by Night has been held by others. The second major character to use the name is Jake Gomez, introduced in the 2020 limited series `Werewolf by Night (Vol. 3)`.
