Wiccan (Billy Kaplan)

Part 1: The Dossier: An At-a-Glance Summary

Part 2: Origin and Evolution

Publication History and Creation

Wiccan made his first appearance in Young Avengers #1, published in April 2005. He was co-created by writer Allan Heinberg and artist Jim Cheung. The conception of the Young Avengers series was a direct response to the status-quo-shattering storyline Avengers Disassembled, which saw the original Avengers team disband. Heinberg and Cheung were tasked with creating a new generation of heroes who were thematically and personally linked to the classic Avengers, but with their own modern sensibilities and challenges. From his inception, Billy Kaplan, initially codenamed “Asgardian,” was designed to be gay. His relationship with teammate Teddy Altman (Hulkling) was a central pillar of the series. At the time, this was a groundbreaking move for a mainstream Marvel Comics title. While the creative team intended for their romance to be explicit, editorial directives initially required them to be more subtle, using subtext and careful dialogue. However, fans quickly embraced the pairing, and over time, their relationship was allowed to become more overt, culminating in an on-panel kiss in Young Avengers: The Children's Crusade #9 (2012) and their marriage in Empyre #4 (2020). Billy's creation and subsequent development represent a significant milestone in diverse representation within superhero comics.

In-Universe Origin Story

The origin of Billy Kaplan is one of the most intricate and magical in the Marvel Universe, deeply intertwined with the Scarlet Witch's history of trauma, power, and loss. Critically, his comic book origin and his MCU origin are fundamentally different.

Earth-616 (Prime Comic Universe)

Wiccan's story begins before his birth, with his mother, the Scarlet Witch. Desperate for a family with her synthezoid husband, The Vision, Wanda Maximoff used her reality-warping Hex powers to magically conceive twin sons, Thomas and William. For a time, they lived happily. However, it was later revealed that to give the children souls, Wanda had unknowingly drawn upon two scattered fragments of the life essence of the demon lord Mephisto. When the villain Master Pandemonium sought to reclaim his own fragmented soul, he discovered the source within the twins and they were reabsorbed by Mephisto, effectively ceasing to exist. The trauma of losing her children was so profound that Wanda's mentor, Agatha Harkness, cast a spell to make her forget she ever had them. This memory suppression eventually failed, and the resurfacing grief, manipulated by Doctor Doom, led to Wanda's catastrophic mental breakdown that resulted in the events of Avengers Disassembled and House of M. However, the souls of William and Thomas were not destroyed. When Mephisto was later defeated, their souls were freed and journeyed back to Earth, where they were reincarnated into two separate families. William's soul was reborn as William “Billy” Kaplan, the eldest of three sons to Jeff and Rebecca Kaplan, who were both cardiologists. Billy grew up in New York City, a fan of superheroes, with the Scarlet Witch being his favorite. He was often bullied for his interests and sexuality. His powers first manifested when he confronted a bully who was threatening him; in a surge of power, he nearly incinerated the tormentor. This incident revealed his innate magical potential, specifically the ability to generate electricity. His life changed forever when the time-traveling Iron Lad came to the present to form a new team of Avengers. Using a special program from his future armor, Iron Lad identified several super-powered teenagers with links to the Avengers, including Billy. Initially, Iron Lad believed Billy's electrokinetic powers meant he was related to Thor, leading to Billy's first, short-lived codename: Asgardian. He soon changed it to Wiccan, embracing his magical nature. It was during the formation of the Young Avengers that he met and fell in love with his teammate, Teddy Altman, the Kree-Skrull hybrid known as Hulkling. Together, the team sought to understand their powers and origins, which set Billy on the long and perilous path to discovering the truth: that he and his teammate Speed (Tommy Shepherd) were the reincarnated souls of the Scarlet Witch's lost sons.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

In the MCU, the origin of Billy is both simpler and more directly tied to Wanda Maximoff's immense power and grief. As depicted in the Disney+ series WandaVision, Billy and his twin brother Tommy do not have a human origin. Following the death of The Vision at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, a grief-stricken Wanda Maximoff travels to Westview, New Jersey, to a plot of land Vision had purchased for them to build a home. Overwhelmed by her loss, Wanda unleashes a colossal wave of Chaos Magic, creating a powerful Hex that transforms the entire town into a sitcom-inspired reality. Within this construct, she manifests an idealized version of Vision and, through a magically accelerated pregnancy, gives birth to twin boys, Billy and Tommy. Unlike their comic counterparts, these children are not reincarnated souls but direct magical constructs—living extensions of Wanda's power and the fabric of the Hex itself. They are, in essence, pieces of Wanda's own soul and magic given sentient form. Within the Hex, Billy rapidly ages and begins to develop powers that differ from his brother's. While Tommy inherits their uncle Pietro's super-speed, Billy's powers are more psionic and magical, reflecting their mother's. He demonstrates telepathy, clairvoyance, and an ability to sense the thoughts and suffering of others, such as when he could hear his “father” Vision struggling outside the Hex's boundary. The tragic nature of their existence becomes clear when Wanda is forced to dismantle the Hex to free the citizens of Westview. As the magical reality dissolves, Billy, Tommy, and the constructed Vision all disintegrate, ceasing to exist in the physical world. In a heartbreaking farewell, Wanda tells her sons, “Thanks for choosing me to be your mom.” However, their story does not end there. In the post-credits scene of WandaVision, Wanda is shown studying the Darkhold, a malevolent book of dark magic. As she masters its secrets, she hears the faint cries of Billy and Tommy calling for her help, implying their consciousnesses persist in some form, possibly across the multiverse. This becomes Wanda's driving obsession in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Corrupted by the Darkhold, she hunts America Chavez to steal her power, intending to travel to a reality where her boys are real—specifically, the children of Earth-838's Wanda Maximoff. This confirms that while the prime MCU Billy does not physically exist, his spiritual essence is a powerful multiversal echo that can be heard through dark magic.

Part 3: Abilities, Equipment & Personality

Earth-616 (Prime Comic Universe)

Wiccan is one of the most powerful magic-users on Earth, with a raw potential that rivals or even exceeds that of Sorcerers Supreme like Doctor Strange. His abilities stem from his unique magical lineage as the son of the Scarlet Witch.

Billy is defined by his compassion, intelligence, and sense of responsibility. He is often the emotional core of the Young Avengers, acting as the cautious planner and moral compass. While initially shy and insecure, he has grown into a confident leader. He is deeply in love with his husband, Hulkling, and their relationship is the bedrock of his life. He is a romantic at heart but also pragmatic, often worrying about the consequences of his and his team's actions.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

As Billy only existed as a child within the Westview Hex, his powers were nascent and undeveloped. However, they clearly mirrored the magical nature of his mother.

The MCU's depiction of Billy's powers is in its infancy. They are presented as primarily psionic and defensive, a stark contrast to his twin Tommy's physical and offensive speed-based powers. This neatly categorizes them as inheritors of their mother's and uncle's abilities, respectively. The comic version of Wiccan is far more developed, having mastered a wide array of specific spells and having a clearly defined cosmic destiny as the Demiurge—a concept the MCU has not yet introduced. The MCU's version is, for now, defined entirely by his magical connection to the Scarlet Witch and the Darkhold.

Part 5: Iconic Events & Storylines

Young Avengers (Volume 1) & Civil War

This foundational arc introduces Billy as he discovers his powers and joins the nascent team. The story focuses on the group's search for their own identities and their connections to the original Avengers. Billy's burgeoning romance with Hulkling is a central subplot. Their involvement in the first superhero Civil War was a major turning point. Siding with Captain America's Secret Avengers, the team fought against hero registration. Their eventual capture and subsequent liberation by Captain America solidified their legitimacy in the eyes of the superhero community and proved they were more than just teenage fans playing dress-up.

Avengers: The Children's Crusade

This is arguably the most important storyline for Wiccan's character development. When Billy's powers flare out of control, the Avengers fear he will become another Scarlet Witch. To clear his name and find answers, the Young Avengers, joined by Magneto and Quicksilver, embark on a globetrotting, time-traveling quest to find the missing Wanda Maximoff. The journey forces Billy to confront Doctor Doom, who reveals his own role in Wanda's downfall. The climax sees Billy find and restore Wanda's memory, fully tap into his Demiurge potential, and come to terms with the immense power at his command. The event definitively confirmed his and Tommy's parentage and reshaped the Scarlet Witch's place in the Marvel Universe.

Empyre

While primarily a Hulkling-centric story, Empyre is a monumental event for Wiccan. The storyline sees Teddy Altman embrace his destiny as the heir to both the Kree and Skrull thrones, uniting the two warring empires under his rule to face the cosmic threat of the Cotati. Billy stands by his side throughout, acting as his most trusted advisor, magical powerhouse, and emotional rock. The event's most celebrated moment comes in issue #4, where, in the midst of a galactic war, Billy and Teddy are married in a quick, heartfelt ceremony, cementing their decades-long love story and making them the most powerful couple in the cosmos.
